he third edition of the Qatar Chamber SMEs Conference will begin tomorrow at the Sheraton Hotel – Doha.
Held under the patronage of H E Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari, Minister of Commerce and Industry, the event is organised by Qatar Chamber in cooperation with the British Embassy in Qatar.
Qatar Development Bank supports the conference as a Development Partner.
The two-day conference aims to enhance the Qatari private sector’s role in the march of the economic development in Qatar.
It focuses on SMEs from the United Kingdom, which has the 6th largest national economy in the world, wherein SMEs account for over 90 percent of all UK companies, and are among the most innovative in the world.
It also seeks to further increase trade between Qatar and the UK by working together through SMEs, and will offer a unique platform for UK SMEs to understand what opportunities are available in Qatar and to meet buyers and investors, whilst serving as a forum for both Qatar and the UK to share good practice and lessons learned.
On the sidelines of the conference, there will be a B2B opportunity, allowing Qatari businessmen to meet with their British counterparts.
CEO of Qatar Development Bank, the Conference’s Development Partner, Abdulaziz Al Khalifa said the bank’s support to the event represents a supplemental to the efforts exerted by the bank for developing Qatar SMEs sector and boosting capabilities of Qatari entrepreneurs.
He also said that the conference offers a good opportunity for helping entrepreneurs to build successful businesses that support the economic diversification strategy in line with Qatar Vision 2030.
“The conference offers a good opportunity for us to inform the British side on the leading examples of the Qatari entrepreneurs and companies in several vital and innovative fields and sectors. It also helps in exchanging expertise between both sides and identifying the entrepreneurship environment in Qatar, as well as promoting investment opportunities and trade exchange between Qatari and British companies,” he added.
The conference’s first session, which is titled ‘Law & Investment’, provides an overview of the SME Sector in the UK and Qatar, including discussing the rules and regulations surrounding business in the UK, the implications to the UK market after the UK Exits the European Union (EU) as well as the current business opportunities in the UK for Qatari business and vice versa. It touches upon the UK and Qatar business and regulatory environment, including tax regulations, talent and why the UK and Qatar are both ideal investment destinations and great places for SMEs to develop.
The second session ‘Sports and Tourism’ discusses the opportunities for SMEs within the Sports Economy and Tourism sectors in Qatar. It covers the future of Qatar’s sports sector up to and after the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and its legacy. It highlights the experience of the UK after hosting the Olympic Games in 2012 and transforming the sports infrastructure into a legacy for all.
It also displays how SMEs can help deliver Qatar’s tourism strategy.
The third session ‘Connected Qatar’ will explore opportunities exist in Qatar for SMEs, including an overview of the country’s tech scene, connectivity and #TASMU programme led by the Ministry of Transport.
Representatives of many from relevant entities will inform participants during the fourth session on the rules, regulations, and practicalities of doing business in Qatar.
